Three split modes — which should you choose?
Different needs suit different split methods. Here's how the three modes compare, so you can pick the right one fast.
| Mode | How it works | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Equal Split | Enter how many equal parts you want; split points are calculated automatically | Splitting a long video into a fixed number of equal parts — e.g. dividing a lecture into 4 parts for batch viewing or uploading. |
| Split by Duration | Enter a length per part; the video is cut at fixed-second intervals | When each part needs a fixed length — e.g. cutting into multiple 60-second clips for social platforms with duration limits. |
| Custom Split Points | Manually add any time points, down to the second | When you need to split at specific scenes, chapters, or actions and the parts have different lengths — the most flexible option. |
Common uses for video splitting
Cut into short clips for social platforms
Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts limit how long a single video can be. Use by-duration mode to cut a long video into multiple equal-length clips and post them as a series — far faster than editing by hand.
Split courses and meeting recordings by chapter
Split online classes, training, or meeting recordings into parts by chapter using custom split points — handy for archiving by topic, re-sending to absent attendees, or sharing a single section.
Extract and distribute multiple highlights
Cut a full performance, match, or livestream recording into multiple clips at the highlight points, then send each to different people or upload to different channels — no need to trim each one by hand.
Get around upload size limits
Email attachments, chat apps, or some cloud drives limit single-file size. Split a large video into equal parts to upload or send separately, and the recipient can restore it with a video merger.
Quick locating and section-by-section review
Split a long recording into equal parts to review section by section, locate the key content faster, then trim or process just that part further.
Create multi-episode series content
Split a single long recording into episodes by topic to build a continuous series, releasing them over time to keep your channel active and your audience engaged.
Video splitting vs. trimming vs. merging — what's the difference?
Video splitting (this tool)
Cuts one video into multiple separate clips, each downloadable on its own. Best for turning "one into many".
Video Trimming
Extracts and keeps a single part of a video, removing the unwanted head and tail. Best for "keeping just one part".
Video Merger
Merges multiple videos into one complete video — the reverse of splitting. Best for turning "many into one".
About Video Splitter
The video splitter cuts one video into multiple separate clips at the time points you specify. It offers three modes: equal-parts splitting (e.g. dividing a 10-minute video into 5 parts of 2 minutes each), by-duration splitting (set a fixed length per part), and custom split points (specify the exact time of each cut).
All processing happens locally in your browser, powered by WebCodecs for fast handling, with no file upload and full privacy. It complements the video trimmer: trimming keeps one part, splitting makes multiple parts; to recombine parts, use the video merger.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I split a video into multiple parts?
After uploading your video, choose a split mode: equal-parts mode lets you enter how many equal parts you want (e.g. 5) and calculates each split point automatically; by-duration mode lets you enter the length of each part (e.g. 60 seconds); custom mode lets you add each split point manually. Then click start, and the tool generates multiple separate clips locally in your browser to download one by one or all at once.
Does splitting re-compress the video or reduce quality?
Not by default. When the clip's codec is compatible with the chosen output format (e.g. MP4→MP4), the tool copies the media data directly without re-encoding—zero quality loss and very fast; the cut snaps to the nearest keyframe, so it may be a second or two off from the time you set. It only re-encodes automatically when the output format isn't compatible with the source codec (such as exporting an H.264 source as WebM), preserving the original parameters as closely as possible. Either way, every part starts on a full keyframe, plays correctly on its own, and has no black screen at the start.
Can I split a video precisely at specific time points?
Yes. In custom mode you can manually add any number of split points (down to the second), and the tool cuts the video at each one to create that many clips. It's ideal for splitting at specific scenes, chapters, or actions.
What's the difference between Video Splitter and Video Trimmer?
Video trimming extracts a single clip from a video (keeping just one part);video trimmeris best when you only need one part; video splitting cuts a video into multiple separate clips, each downloadable on its own.
How many segments can I split into?
Equal-split mode supports 2 to 30 segments; custom mode lets you add split points with no strict limit, though keeping it under 20 is recommended to avoid excessive browser memory usage.
Is there a duration or file-size limit for splitting?
The tool itself has no fixed duration limit; we recommend files under 2GB for best performance. Since everything runs in your browser, very large or very long videos depend on your device's memory and CPU — use desktop Chrome or Edge and reduce the number of clips you split at once.
Will my file be uploaded to a server during splitting?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your file never leaves your device, keeping your privacy fully protected.
Which video formats are supported?
Supports reading MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, and other popular formats. Output supports MP4, WebM, and MOV. For best performance, keep file sizes under 2 GB.
Can I split videos on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers (iOS Safari 16+ and Android Chrome) with no app to install. Large files are limited by phone memory, so compress first or choose fewer parts.
Do I need to pay or sign up to split videos?
It's completely free, with no account, watermark, or usage limits. Just open the page and start — all processing happens locally and uses no server resources.
